Supporting Your Child as a Writer

As students grow as readers, they begin to blossom as writers, too!  It's wonderful to watch them working at sounding out words and reading back what they have written.  You can support your child's writing at home by providing him/her with a small notebook and encouraging him/her to draw a picture and write a sentence or two about the day or about anything else they want to express.  Sit nearby so that you can help sound out words.  Say the word very slowly, stretching it out for the child to hear.  When you encounter blends or vowel combinations that he/she is not ready for, say, "This part is tricky.  Would you like me to tell you?"  Once the child has done some writing, have him/her read it back to you, and praise him/her effusively.  This is hard work!!!
Some children are moving to the next stage in their writing; they know there's a "real" way to spell each word and they want to know it.  If your child asks you directly for spelling help, provide it!  We don't want to frustrate them.
Thanks in advance for any support of your child's writing you can provide.  Just 5 or 10 minutes a few times a week will help a great deal!
