Apple Pies

Mrs. Cullen had a great idea!  She suggested that, after we went apple picking, we come back to school and bake apple pies.  We picked up some Cortland apples at the orchard and families sent in frozen pie crusts.  Children used apple peelers and corers to prepare the apples and then helped to mix sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and a dash of salt.  We popped our pies into the school ovens (thank you, Mrs. Mayo!) and pulled them out just before bus time.  On Monday, we'll be enjoying our school-made apple pies.
Here's the recipe we used, in case you and your children would like to try it again at home:

                                                                   Yummy Apple Pie

3 lbs. of apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
dast of salt
1 1/2 teaspoon margarine or butter
double pie crust

Add bottom crust to pie plate.  Place half of the apples in pie plate.  Mix sugar, spices and salt.  Pour sugar mixture over the apples in the pie plate.  Add remaining apples to pie plate and pour the rst of the sugar mixture over the apples.  Cut margarine/butter into 3 pieces and arrange on top of the apples.  Add top crust.  Using a pastry brush, brush the top crust lightly with milk.  Put 4 slits in top crust.  Bake at 425 for about 50 minutes.
